History: The orange and pomelo came from Asia to the new world and cultivated in the Carribean islands. The first documentation of grapefruit is in 1789 in Jamaica. Called the “forbidden fruit,” it originated from Barbados and Jamaica and landed in America in the 1800s. The grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) we see grown in Florida and Texas came from an accidental hybrid cross between an orange and a pomelo (Citrus Maxima).

Grapefruit has an unmistakable fresh scent. It is a citrus fruit, and it is what one thinks of when describing citrus flavors or fragrances.
Grapefruit essential oil is surprisingly useful for stimulating your body’s metabolism.
Your endocrine system is a series of glands that secrete hormones which regulate all bodily functions. Grapefruit essential oil helps to stimulate the system and keeps the hormones in balance. Balanced hormones mean you feel energized, alert and healthy.
Aids in Weight Loss
A healthy endocrine system and metabolism mean you can burn fat more efficiently. Grapefruit oil, like the fruit, can curb sugar cravings and reduce appetite for quicker weight loss. Try diffusing grapefruit oil before mealtimes to keep your hunger in check.
A Natural Disinfectant
Create a natural disinfectant cleaner by combining two drops grapefruit oil, one part white vinegar and four parts water. It’s a practical solution with no chemical residue. Safe for kids and pets, the grapefruit oil masks the vinegar scent.
Stimulates Your Immune System
Grapefruit oil contains powerful antioxidants that not only boost the immune system, but they can help eliminate free radicals in your body. Free radicals are substances that promote illness and even cancer.
Helps With Some Depression Issues
Many people find that by adding a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser, it can help them achieve a more positive mental attitude. The scent gives an almost instantaneous boost to your energy level which is essential for people suffering from depression.
Reverse Acne and Rosacea
Commercially available acne and skin care products often contain grapefruit essential oil. It increases the skin’s pH level helping your body heal and prevent further outbreaks.
And, grapefruit oil’s antibacterial properties are effective against the strain that causes rosacea.
Just add a few drops to a non-clogging (non-comedogenic) carrier oil jojoba or sweet almond oil, and apply it to your skin nightly.
Because grapefruit oil is an excellent antiseptic, you can speed the healing when you apply it directly to cuts or other small wounds. The antimicrobial properties help prevent infection.
Use and Safety
Always dilute grapefruit oil and other essential oils with a carrier oil. Essential oils are concentrated and could be harmful to your skin at full strength. Use Jojoba, coconut, or sweet almond oil for a carrier oil. You only need six drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil to make a 1% concentration. 12 drops per ounce equal 2% and so forth.
Grapefruit oil may cause skin irritation, even when diluted. Test it on a small patch of skin first. Grapefruit oil is phototoxic meaning you should avoid direct sunlight and UV rays when using it. It can cause skin irritation during sun exposure. Pregnant women should consult their medical practitioner before using grapefruit oil.
Brief History of Grapefruit
Some people say grapefruit got its name because the young fruit grows in small green clusters similar to those of grapes. What most people don’t know is that if a grapefruit becomes overripe on the tree and the skin turns dark brown, the fruit becomes very juicy and tastes just like a grape, not the sour taste we usually associate with it.
The Reverend Griffith Hughes wrote the first descriptions of grapefruit in 1750. Somehow the name of “forbidden fruit” became associated with it, presumably by biblical scholars at the time searching for the original tree of good and evil in the Garden of Eden.
